The interdisciplinary research group on Applied Ethics, led by Prof. Saskia Nagel, explores how new human-technology-relations – as for example enabled by research in the fields of neuroscience, cognitive science, AI, or data science - influence human self-understanding, and the understanding of values.
The position is situated in the Cluster of Excellence “Internet of Production” funded by the German Research Foundation.

Your profile:
- University degree (Master or equivalent) and/or dissertation in Philosophy and/or Applied Ethics and/or Interdisciplinary Studies, with a specialization in Philosophy/Ethics
- Pronounced knowledge in Applied Ethics and/or Practical Philosophy
- Experience in interdisciplinary work
- Good analytical skills
- Good IT-skills
- Work has been presented at conferences and accepted in international, competitive journals
- Very good proficiency in English (oral and written)
- Ability to do independent scientific work

- Willingness to teach in various degree programs on issues of applied ethics

Your responsibilities:
- The ethical reflection of questions of artificial intelligence, automation, changes in working environments, and new areas of responsibility
- Studies in cooperation with engineers, computer scientists, and psychologists on moral dilemmas in engineering research and application
- Assistance in the preparation, implementation and follow-up of project workshops
- Publication of project results in journals and/or presentation of results at international conferences
- Communication in the Cluster of Excellence

What we offer:

The position is for 2 or 3 years and to be filled as soon as possible.

The selected candidate will also be affiliated to the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research, which provides an excellent environment for interdisciplinary research related to climate change.

John Cabot University is an accredited American liberal arts college in the heart of Rome, Italy.

The Department of History and Humanities is seeking to hire an adjunct lecturer to teach one or two philosophy courses in the fall 2019 semester. The courses will probably be in ethics, ancient philosophy, or introductory philosophy, although candidates with other areas of competence are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in philosophy (preferably from a U.S. or U.K. university) and teaching experience in a student-centered environment. They must also be fluent in English and have permission to work in the European Union.

For administrative reasons, preference will be given to candidates already based in Rome or with other, substantial reasons to be in Rome for the fall 2019 semester.

The position is limited to the fall 2019 semester: although there may be vacancies in future semesters, it is not guaranteed that the person hired for the fall semester will be re-hired.

This is a part-time position with 65% of the working hours of a full-time employee. It is a fixed term position for initially 24 months in the research project “Forms of Practice, Forms of Knowledge – Method, Notation and the Dynamics of Perspectives in the Life Sciences” (PI Dr. Robert Meunier), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) (§ 2 Abs. 2 WissZeitVG). The position offers the possibility to complete a PhD.

The project aims at developing a model of scientific practice in the life sciences that facilitates an understanding of how different forms of research activities generate different forms of scientific knowledge. Based on such a model, scientific change will be reconstructed in terms of complex dynamic relations between research fields. Tasks:
Developing a subproject in the framework of the above-mentioned research project. The position offers the possibility for further academic qualification; in particular, the successful candidate may choose to complete a PhD.

Requirements:
University degree in philosophy, history of science or science and technology studies and the desire to complete a PhD degree in philosophy. The candidate is expected to show the ability to work in a team and interest in interdisciplinary collaboration. Demonstrable interest in questions of philosophy of science, history or philosophy of the life sciences, or sociological approaches to the sciences is desirable.
