Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Neuroscience

The Brain and Mind Institute and the Rotman Institute of Philosophy at Western University in London, Canada invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Neuroscience. The Fellowship will provide a new scholar in philosophy of neuroscience with a unique opportunity to pursue his or her chosen areas of scholarly research in collaboration with neuroscientists and philosophers.

Western's Brain and Mind Institute is a leading international center for cognitive neuroscience research (http://www.uwo.ca/its/brain/). Ongoing research seeks to understand the neural bases of mental abilities such as perception, memory, reasoning, attention, self-awareness, motor control, language, and consciousness. Faculty include six Canada Research Chair holders and the recipient of a Canada Excellence Research Chair.

The Rotman Institute of Philosophy is situated in one of Canada's leading departments of philosophy, and it brings together philosophers and scientists to work on problems of global significance (http://www.rotman.uwo.ca/). Rotman faculty include two Canada Research Chair holders, and ongoing research focuses on a variety of aspects of contemporary physics, biology, and medical science.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Neuroscience has a one-year term with the possibility of renewal for a second year, and the Fellow will be co-supervised by faculty from the Brain and Mind Institute and the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. The Fellow will be affiliated with a lab in the Brain and Mind Institute and will participate in a program of ongoing neuroscience research related to his or her own philosophical interests. The Fellow will have an office within the Rotman Institute in the Department of Philosophy, and will participate fully in the research life of the Institute, including participation in conferences, research groups, and reading groups. The Fellow is also expected to teach a half course in the Department of Philosophy.

Candidates must have had a PhD in Philosophy conferred within five years of the start of the Fellowship. All PhD requirements must be completed by the starting date of this Postdoctoral Fellowship, July 1, 2013. The stipend is $38,000 CDN plus $6,180 CDN for teaching a half course in the Department of Philosophy. Additionally, the Fellow will be provided a research allowance of $5,000 CDN. The Rotman Institute of Philosophy at The Western University in London, Ontario, Canada invites applicants for two separate Postdoctoral Fellowships in Philosophy and Science. Each fellowship is offered for one year with a possibility of renewal for a second year. The fellowships provide an opportunity for new scholars to pursue their chosen areas of scholarly research further in a research-intensive environment. For one fellowship, we seek a scholar working on general issues in philosophy of science, such as the status of laws, causation, and symmetries, in light of contemporary physics. For the second, we seek a scholar whose philosophical project engages the sciences, broadly construed – including philosophical research related to specific sciences, or research regarding the ethical and political dimensions of science. North Carolina State University seeks an established scholar to provide leadership for its interdisciplinary program in Science, Technology & Society (STS). The STS program provides crucial links among the University’s strengths in humanities, social science, science, technology, and engineering fields. Full-time, two-year, non-tenure track position beginning Fall 2103. The position's main responsibility is teaching undergraduate courses in both philosophy and literature. The position carries a 3/3 teaching load, with an additional requirement to perform internal divisional work and to develop initiatives to promote the humanities at Drury University and in surrounding communities. The successful candidate will possess a solid knowledge of philosophical theories in ethics and an ability to teach ethics through an analysis of literary works would be additionally desirable, as well as solid knowledge of the literature of an historical period between antiquity and the Enlightenment (specific time period and cultural context open.) An ability to focus pedagogically on the philosophical and literary dimensions of such works is highly desirable. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, and an earned doctorate in either philosophy or literature, with a significant background in the alternate discipline.

Drury's Humanities Division boasts a highly collegial, collaborative, and interdisciplinary culture. The Division has seven majors, including philosophy, literature, religion, writing, communication, foreign languages, and history.
