Postdoctoral Positions in Values and Public Policy

The University Center for Human Values and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs invite applications for postdoctoral positions in Values and Public Policy. We aim to support highly promising scholars trained in moral and political philosophy, political theory, normative economics and related areas to develop a research agenda in the ethical dimensions of public policy.

Candidates selected will undertake a research project exploring a normative problem arising in an area of public policy in which the Woodrow Wilson School sponsors research. They will be affiliated with a unit of the School that can inform and support their work. They will also be invited to participate in programs of the University Center for Human Values. Candidates will be expected to contribute one course each year to the School’s undergraduate program on a topic related to ethical issues in public policy, subject to sufficient enrollment and approval by the Dean of the Faculty.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed the requirements for the Ph.D. by September 1, 2013 and must not have held the degree for more than three years by that date. They may not be employed by another institution during the term of their Princeton appointment.

Applicants’ dissertation research need not be specifically in values and public policy, but they will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to developing a research project in this area during their time at Princeton. Projects related to environmental policy, population and health, democratic institutions and processes, information technology policy and global governance may have an advantage, although we will consider proposals related to any area in which the School sponsors research. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the applicant’s previous accomplishments, the promise of the proposed research project in values and public policy, and the likelihood that the project will be enhanced by being carried out in the environment of the Woodrow Wilson School. Term of Appointment

Job Description:

Requirements:
A PhD in philosophy by the effective date of employment is required.

The candidate should be well grounded in Western philosophy, the Catholic intellectual tradition, and have the ability to teach in a non-western area. Expertise in Asian philosophy is particularly desired. Commitment to and demonstrated success in undergraduate teaching and scholarship is required. A record of publication will be an asset. The University of Maryland Baltimore County invites nominations and applications for the UMBC Postdoctoral Fellows Program for Faculty Diversity. UMBC is dedicated to ensuring a diverse, scholarly environment and encouraging outstanding individuals to enter the academic profession. The purpose of the Program is to support promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and to prepare those scholars for possible tenure track appointments at UMBC. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the professoriate.

UMBC will appoint recent recipients of the Ph.D. as Postdoctoral Fellows for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2013. The fellow will receive a starting stipend of $40,000, health benefits, $3,000 for conference travel and preparation of scholarly work, office space with computer, library and other privileges at the university. During the two-year term of appointment, the fellow will teach one course a year in the host department. All fellows are expected to be in residence during the academic year and participate in departmental seminars and related activities. Each fellow will be provided teaching and research mentors and specialized professional development opportunities across the campus. The remainder of the fellow's time will be devoted to pursuing research.

Successful candidates for the Program will be selected on the basis of scholarly promise and potential to add to the diversity of the UMBC community. Position Characteristics:The successful candidate will be able to teach core philosophy courses in the department, including critical thinking, logic and epistemology. Area of Specialization is Epistemology (very broadly construed) with an Area of Competence in cognitive science, history of modern or philosophy of law. The department has teaching needs in the philosophy of law, philosophy of mind (broadly construed) and cognitive science. There will also be opportunities for mentoring in the department's Pre-Law Option. Teaching assignment is typically 8 courses a year (4 courses a semester with typically 2-3 preps) at the undergraduate level. Specific assignments will depend on department needs. Other duties will include, but are not limited to, advising students, participating in program development, and committee service at all levels of university governance. The successful candidate may be called upon to teach in a distance education mode and will be encouraged to develop web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction.
